Buijtenland van Rhoon

The Buijtenland van Rhoon is the largest regenerative and nature-inclusive agricultural area in the Netherlands. One of the crops grown in Rhoon is flax.

Flax is an environmentally friendly, sustainable crop that supports biodiversity and offers unprecedented possibilities for designers.

“As a steward, I gained five years of hands-on experience in cultivating and processing flax (2019 to 2024). It has profoundly inspired and transformed my practice. Working on the land, witnessing the transformation from fiber to thread and from thread to remarkably beautiful, strong textiles—this is the way to develop a deep connection and gain meaningful insights for the future of art, craft and design.

Insights that we all need in order to rebuild a healthy relationship with textiles: textiles that only become more beautiful with wear, that age gracefully, and that carry our memories. Objects to cherish.

To reintroduce flax into the textile chain, Buijtenland van Rhoon, seed and flax expert Van de Bilt, and textile expert Maaike Gottschal of the Textielfabrique have joined forces in the project Linen Beyond Fashion.

Our goal is to bring flax back into the local textile chain. In the coming years, we will focus on both design, art, craft and education, nurturing a new generation of designers, artists who understand the value of flax and know how to work with it. In this way, craftsmanship returns to the hands of designers and artists.
