In the second semester of my study at DAE (contextual art at the Design Academy in Eindhoven). I  tried to create a work by more authors. I made an openings setting (openings dance) with the request for others to add or follow up. I did this because the individual production of me and other was too painful to see. Many materials were spoiled for the artistic sketching and production of solo works. I couldn’t believe that an Institute like our most famous design school was mainly focussed on the individual and solo production of unique “design” works. Of course I tried to give clear outlines of the plan but it might have been hard to read for others. The context of the work was the assignment on “icons”. We had to pic two iconic works to start with. I took a feminist Up design chair (by Gaetano Pesce) and and the fountain (by Marcel Duchamp). Or: The need of a good fitting sitting and the need to express oneself.. And I wanted the project to be fun and serious at the same time. A learning process.

My idea of researching the iconic designs was based on doing (re-enacting the works), reading, thinking and sharing.

I did a redo of an unknown work of Duchamp: The everyday act of standing on a chair and dropping a twine.

I made redo of of his chair in a mini version made from soft bals and tape
I tried out all the chairs in my house in all possible ways of sitting
I installed all the chairs in a line outside the house in the snow and filmed them
I broke an eg on the snow and left my house and my former husband.

Sketch installation “Large Glass”. What did I do?
The work was created in the place that was called the “dirty space”. The dirty space  is the only room in the DAE contextual design department where you are allowed to make a mess and use fire, glue, chemicals etc. For my installation I wiped all the mess of students who did worked there before into a defined and taped area (the area where there was the reflection of the incoming light of the window). I covered the trash filled floor area with flour, bird sand and rice. Took away the tape on the floor.

Next to this floor “tapestry” I did install two speakers, or rather black spray painted concrete blocks that could be replaced by a bit more impressive speakers later. On the outside glass wall of the dirty space I did defined areas with tape for printed images. And I taped defined areas on the floor for video monitors. Left from the large glass I Installed a blackboard with a chemical recipe. Next to the “Large Glass” installation I did hang an old letter of my grandma with the instruction text: openings dance. I left the building in the afternoon. And hoped that somebody would follow up my instruction.

What happened to the work?
I arrived at school just on time for the assessment the day after I made the installation. I saw that things were changed. It was not really changed in the way I wanted but that was ok for me. So I didn’t changed anything and took the risk to present it like it was at this stage to my teachers. The work was appreciated but not completely understood. They told me it looked like an aftermath (while for me it was pointing forward as it was not finished). Also the head of the department thought it was too much going into the direction of composition and art and could not be understood enough in a design context.

Elements:
– Glass window; if you arrive on the toop floor of the Dutch Design Academy you will see a huge window/wall. It is the window of the “dirty space”. On the Left side of the window were taped areas for 3 A3 prints.
– Postcard; A newspaper /collage postcard with dancers in futuristic costumes and the text “openings dance”. The post card was glued on the wall next to the glass window.
– A blackboard with the 3 chemical components that are needed to create an Indigo natural dye vat. The components coming together in the word “creation” (or Funeral).
– The empty containers of the the components that are used to create the installation on the other side of the window; Bird sand, Flour and rice.
– Through the window you see and installation that is a reflection of glass screen on the floor. The floor is patterned with trash covered by layers of rice, floor and bird sand.
– 2 black speakers. The idea was that they would be replaced by two real speakers. I don’t remember it there was a tune or a setlist connected to the installation. I guess so but the playlist changed rapidly
