This masterclass offers a very comprehensive introduction to dyeing with natural indigo and the associated “resist” techniques. Indigo is a “cold dye” (±20 degrees) and only bonds in an oxygen-free environment. Over the centuries, various pattern/print techniques have been developed especially for this way of dyeing. Examples of this are ikat, kasuri, katazome, shibori and batik. Instead of drawing or painting with the color, the areas where the color should not adhere are covered.
You will learn more about the background of the dye plant (Indigofera tinctoria) and you will learn how to make a dye bath from natural ingredients. You will also learn “reverse thinking and design”. In the masterclass, you will make samples in a diverse palette of shades and techniques.
You will learn about the before and after treatment of your material and the dyeing process itself.
The workshop includes materials. You don’t have to take anything with you. Experience is not necessary. The participants are expected to have an inquisitive and independent working attitude.

Deze masterclass biedt een zeer uitgebreide introductie op het verven met natuurlijke indigo en de bijbehorende “resist” technieken. Indigo is een “cold dye” (±20 graden) en hecht alleen in een zuurstofloze omgeving. Door de eeuwen heen zijn er speciaal voor deze manier van verven verschillende patroon / print technieken ontwikkeld. Voorbeelden hier van zijn ikat, kasuri, katazome, shibori en batik. In plaats van met de kleur te tekenen of te schilderen worden de gebieden waar de kleur niet mag hechten afgedekt.
Je leert meer over de achtergrond van de verfplant (Indigofera tinctoria) en je leert hoe je een verfbad maakt van natuurlijke ingrediënten. Ook leer je “omgekeerd denken en ontwerpen”. Je maakt in de workshop staaltjes in een divers pallet aan tinten en technieken.
Je leert over het voor en na behandelen van je materiaal en het verfprocces zelf.
De workskhop is inclusief materiaal. Je hoeft dus niets mee te nemen. Ervaring is niet nodig. Van de deelnemers wordt wel een onderzoekende en zelfstandige werkhouding verwacht.
