Artist Natascha Hagenbeek has a fine antenna for what is going on in society.
She investigates which developments are important for the future. In her work and personal life she questions truthfulness and (re)searches the space for autonomy and innovation within the existing system. The photo’s in the exposition are made especially for the magazine “Thisisnotparis” that Maaike Gottschal published in 2005 for the Arnhem Mode Biennale. The magazinne was inspired by Stéphane Mallarmé’s fashion magazine “La Derniere Mode”.
The serie photo’s is called Strike:Oppose
Strike:Oppose is a slogan I found in ‘Cheap Date Magazine’ last year (Spring/Summer 2004, page 31). The slogan appears in a ‘campaign’ in which the reader is invoked to go on Fashion Strike. I like the ambiguity of the ‘campaign’. What caught my eye first was the slogan ‘look bad, feel good’ – which could be seen as the starting point for the following series.
One pose inspired by Mary Wigman (1886-1973), German dancer and pioneer of modern expressive dance as developed in Central Europe, which came to be known in Germany as ‘Ausdrucktanz’.
Five poses selected from fifty-five positions of uninhibited behavior in public space. Fifty-five pictures were taken of visitors to the public library, they were kept in chronological order and divided into five choreographies. Five pictures were selected from the five choreographies performed on the basis of appearance.
Performer: Julia Stüssi
Photographer: Melanie Bonajo
Locations: Public Library Amsterdam, Maastricht, Arnhem
