Od. 5.59-62: “A great fire blazed on the hearth and the smell of cedar cleanly split and sweet wood burning bright wafted a cloud of fragrance down the island. Deep inside she sang, the goddess Calypso, lifting her breathtaking voice as she guided back and forth before her loom, her golden shuttle weaving ”.

Before there was written language, we used chants to memorize intricate weaving patterns. All techniques (arts, crafts), patterns and oral narratives are the foreland of our written language and connected to instruments that help us to express ourselves. We have a common language (Indo-European language family). And this common background lies in the actions we do; growing crops, eating, making, sharing and making love: create

November 2020 Ceci created a new setting in the Textielfabrique space for a live performance by sopran Lotte Bovi. Lotte used the context of textielfabrique and the input of ceci. The project was part of Charloisspeciaal.

After the performance we did more sound recordings. The Soundscape that came out will be printed as LP and comes with the “Book of Love” by Maaike Gottschal. The soundscape uses weaving patterns as well as patterns of words and structures that are used in weaving as well as in music.

Video Above was the after programme. We had a drink, shared stories and grilled marshmellows at the fire.

Ancient Egyptians discover a wild herb growing in marshland from which a sweet substance could be extracted. This substance, the sap of the marshmallow plant, is combined with a honey-based candy recipe to create a confection so delightful that it’s reserved only for the pharaohs and the gods. The fire I personally see at the place where things happen and transform.

Live performance for Charlois Special. Lotte Bovi Sings Loud Cows. A poem/ Lyric by Ursula K. Le Guin
“The Wave in the Mind”. The piece is about the importance (of women) to speak up and use their voice. To be heard.

“What happened to stories and poems after the invention of printing is a strange and terrible thing. Literature lost its voice. Except on the stage, it was silenced. Gutenberg muzzled us.

By the time I got born the silence of literature was considered an essential virtue and a sign of civilisation. Nannies and grannies told stories aloud to babies, and “primitive” peoples spoke their poems, poor illiterate jerks, but the real stuff, literature, was literally letters, letterpress, little black noiseless marks on paper. And libraries were temples of the goddess of silence attended by vigilant priestesses going Shhhh.”
